No, not that Red Hook in Brooklyn with the Fairway Market, lobster restaurant and somewhat made-up maritime bars. Rather, the small town a two hour drive up the Hudson River and into the woods of the Hudson Valley and Catskills region. This trip it meant we had snowy paths of the just-waking-to-spring woods practically to ourselves — an incredible contrast to our daily life. We tracked critters, poked at the lip of the still-frozen Hudson and even passed a few stoic saints the path is part of a Dominican Sisters retreat center as we crunched through the snow at the Falling Waters Preserve. Later, we stopped off of Route 9 and met Michael and Callie, the couple along with their chickens, pigs, cows and sheep behind the bounty of gorgeous steaks, chops, sausages and just-collected eggs for sale at Sawkill Farm. A little daydreamy window shopping is always in order wherever we wander, and for that we spent time running our hands along the expertly planed tables and trying out chairs Goldilocks-style at Sawkille , a beautiful furniture and goods store in Rhinebeck. Not entirely removed from civilization though, we did venture into Rhinebeck and snacked on crispy wood oven-fired pizzas and a towering salad of shredded greens at Market St. In Red Hook, we were welcomed as regulars by the fine folks at Mercato.

With new restaurants and shops opening up all the time and an array of historic settings, it’s a shame to glaze over these spots for the more popular and obvious stops. Rhinebeck is buzzing with patrons in its own delightful and gentle way. Red Hook has destination after destination that you can easily miss if you’re just mindlessly driving through. Tivoli is tucked away, happy to be out of the limelight, thrilled to welcome back its true fans and regulars who return time and time again.

Gratifying above all else is how Rhinebeck’s purveyors have such a deep affection for their businesses’ home town.

Rude Manager!. On a house-hunting trip to Red Hook we decided to stop for an early dinner here based on the wonderful reviews. The waitress was great, the diner itself was adorable (but the women’s bathroom toilet was clogged) and four of our meals were good except for my 8 year old daughter’s Mac & Cheese (that the waitress told us was the last of the lot left over from lunch).

Saturday, December 1, It took a Village!!! Thank you to every single person from the many, many volunteers that filled the hundreds of jobs that put this community event together, to the ones that fed us and the many that entertained us, the folks that looked out for our safety, and especially to every reveler that came to celebrate Sinterklaas in the Hudson Valley.

Thank you to our donors and our volunteers. Share your photos and videos with Sinterklaas on Facebook or contact us. We’d be thrilled to archive hi-res images. Every year brings new events and characters to dazzle our community, honor our children and bring light to this darkest time of the year. Children are the focus — becoming kings and queens for the day, turning the switches of the original story into royal scepters.

Children make scepters and crowns for themselves at the Crowns and Branches workshops. They understand their responsibility to be a good king or queen. Sinterklaas Send-Off Celebration in Kingston Mirroring the original Dutch legend in which Sinterklaas leaves Spain by boat for Holland, our Hudson Valley re-creation provides a day of fun-filled activities in Kingston ending with a parade to escort Sinterklaas to his boat for the week-long ride across the Hudson River to Rhinebeck.

Sinterklaas Festival Day in Rhinebeck The day features performances at venues throughout the village: Strolling musicians, dancing Grumpuses and a variety of colorful characters wander the streets of the village to delight children with stories and treats.

At Hudson Valley Malt, we create malt the old school heritage way. We are an artisan craft Malthouse in Germantown New York. The exciting growth of the craft breweries and distilleries that surround us gets us fired-up and inspired! What we do is an art. We malt grains the old fashioned way, through the process of Floor Malting. It requires passion, getting up early, working with your hands, your back and your head to focus on detail. My customers love the fact that my ingredients are sourced locally.

We have been using Germantown Beer Farms malt for about 8 months now and really like the flavor and character that these locally grown NY malts bring to our beer!!

Bergen, New Netherland At the time of European contact in the 17th century, Hudson County was the territory of the Lenape or Lenni-Lenape , namely the bands or family groups known as the Hackensack , the Tappan , the Raritan , and the Manhattan. They were a seasonally migrational people who practiced small-scale agriculture companion planting augmented by hunting and gathering which likely, given the topography of the area, included much shell fishing and trapping.

These groups had early and frequent trading contact with Europeans. Their Algonquian language can still be inferred in many local place names such as Communipaw , Harsimus , Hackensack , Hoboken , Weehawken , Secaucus , and Pamrapo Henry Hudson , for whom the county and river on which it sits are named, established a claim for the area in when anchoring his ship the Halve Maen Half Moon at Harsimus Cove and Weehawken Cove.

In , Michael Pauw received a land patent, or patroonship and purchased the land between the Hudson and Hackensack Rivers, giving it the Latin-ized form of his name, Pavonia. Relations were tenuous with the Lenape, and eventually led to Kieft’s War , which began as a slaughter by the Dutch at Communipaw and is considered to be one of the first genocides of Native Americans by Europeans.

YourCrossfitPal Leave a comment Having a warm-up before the exercise itself starts is something that most people do, maybe without reflecting a lot about how and why you do it. Depending on what type of physical activity you are going to do, and what requirements it imposes on you, the warm-up should be designed accordingly. In some sports, it”s a must to focus on the shoulders, hip, groin, and back.

The drive alone is cleansing after a full day at work. Started heading south of Nassau on Route and pulled off to admire some of the fall colors at the St. Mary’s Cemetery on the very outskirts of the village. A great man from my childhood was laid to rest here so Pastor Norkus is always in my thoughts when I drive by.

He was the pastor for a very small church in East Nassau that molded me and many other close family and friends growing up.
