Now, more than 15 years later, I still have my PMD , and yet another one to last me through my dotage. There were just two stereo models, the PMD being the 3-head version, featuring Dolby B and dbx noise reduction. The single-motor transport uses a belt-driven capstan system for low flutter, and while not bullet-proof, the mechanism has been reliable and unfussy. Record speed is very accurate, and variable playback speed allows tuning to pitch of recordings made on other machines. After I bought the second one which was actually a CP , made for the European market but otherwise identical , I had its speed synchronized by All-In-One Electronics tape-deck whiz, Boris, after he had made some other circuit board repairs earlier this year. A few weeks later I decided it might be interesting to once again measure the original along with the newly acquired one. I first ran curves in Summer 89 Volume 9 1 , and was quite astonished, not just at the frequency response, but the fact that it would maintain those curves at Dolby calibration level, something no other cassette deck in my experience had ever managed. What this tells us is that with this tape [TDK MA-X], especially if one switches in dbx and the limiter both off for measurements here , it is almost impossible to drive this recorder into distortion. The less potent tapes showed a dB or so greater rolloff at 16 kHz and above, the ferric down 3 or 4 dB at the highest frequencies, while the Type 2 and 4 had strong energy to 20 kHz.

Nils Lofgren Band Live: We decided to start with the most problematic area: As mentioned earlier, there are a number of variables involved here that don’t exist with CD. All of this before the DAC has its say in the matter, and far too complex a matter to cover adequately in this essay. So we settled on a playback chain that, theoretically and by reputation, should provide discriminating results.
I expect you’ll judge for yourself.
Nov 13, · For the first time yesterday I watched a DVD on my Oppo. I was home with the kids and they wanted to watch Elf, which we do not have on BD. I have to admit I was fairly underwhelmed with the upscaling job the did.
Remove the USB drive from the computer. Ensure there is no disc in the player and that no USB device is connected to the player. The player will automatically start searching for the new firmware from the USB drive and prompt you to start the firmware upgrade. Follow the on-screen instructions to begin the firmware upgrade. The video output will be temporarily disabled once the upgrade is in progress. After the upgrade is complete, the unit will turn itself off and then back on again. If you notice that the firmware versions displayed do not match the versions listed in this release note, please try another method or contact us.
We recommend resetting the player to factory defaults after upgrading the firmware. Re-enter your customized settings as necessary after resetting. The firmware upgrade is complete.

I had the pleasure of meeting him the first time about five years ago when I toured the Focal factory, with my friend John Bevier. After business hours, he was. Every time I saw him at a hifi show, no matter how busy, he always took the time to come over my way and give me a big hug. Even though I am a relative newcomer to this industry, he always inquired to how I was doing. September 18, Cleaning the closets a bit today, I ran across the first issue of The Absolute Sound.

Update: Just got a reply back from Oppo and I’m told that all outputs are active at the same time, so I can hook up the analog outputs and the digital and switch when I want to.
Darbee has a different take on video processing that improves depth and detail in an image by increasing or decreasing the local pixel luminance. They essentially use light to increase the details by adding additional light some cases or additional shadow in others, to the image on screen. This is different from the contrast enhancement technologies you may have tried in the past that just adjust the overall white or black levels.
Those never work and should always be turned off. But Darbee works at the pixel level, so it is quite different. Other sharpness or edge enhancing technologies tend to introduce a lot of artifacts to an image. Darbee is different from those as well. Knowing that it is a totally different technology from the picture enhancement options we tell you to always turn off, the question is: The technology whitepaper at the Darbee website goes into great detail if you’re interested in reading it.
This review really came down to the Darbee processing and how much we thought it added to or detracted from the standard Blu-ray experience. Fans of the QDEO chips may find that hard to swallow, but it was for a good cause. They added a dedicated Darbee button to the remote so you can have quick access to your Darbee settings to make easy adjustments on the fly.
What has Hockey got to do with this?
The second is that the sound bar is the place where all connected devices should be fed both audio and video. Depending upon which route you choose, the set up and configuration of your sound bar speaker will vary greatly. Doing this means that you would connect your Blu-ray player, streaming media device Roku, AppleTV, Chromecast, etc directly to the television. Then, you can pull audio from the television via its optical digital output.
May 18, · Plug the Streaming Stick into the MHL port of your Roku-Ready OPPO Blu-ray Player and you’ve got the best streaming experience in the world-totally integrated with your new Blu-ray player.
My main usage will be listening to 2- and 6-channel music, then some movies occasionally. So, I hope you honestly can answer my following questions: Are you currently designing new players to replace these two? I want a new player in about 6 months time, maximum a year from now. The licensing agreement is preventing OPPO Digital INC and all other brands of Blu-ray player manufactories from offering a firmware update that would allow the region free and region selectable feature to be included in the main menu of the Blu-ray player.
It could take several months or more for a third party company to make a region free and or region selectable hardware modification for the OPPO Blu-ray players. Those companies cannot work on region hardware designs until the new OPPO Blu-ray players are shipped.

Mar 28, At this point yes its pretty quiet. If you put your ear right up next to the speakers you can barely detect some noise, but it took several tries at routing and rerouting cables to get there. However let me also add while trouble shooting the situation using only 1 meter IC’s with the directly driving all amps it was quiet as a church mouse, pretty much dead quiet.
At some point I will probably belly up to the bar with the XMC-1 and go all balanced due to the length of cables I use. Note we have a projection system rather than TV and thus this requires the source gear to be off to the side, amps below the screen with longer runs of cable. Previously the setup had a 7 channel amp of smaller dimensions also off to the side but with longer speaker cables.
The point of all this is, if you are using shorter runs of RCA cables and be very careful with routing you’ll probably have a very quiet, simple and efficient system. I would describe it as warm, open yet very detailed. Always always easy to listen to, never fatiguing.

Air Force essentially spell the word aloud, “eh ess eh pee. Since days of yore the military in general, and sailors in particular, have often had a rather pithy dare I say ‘tasteless’? That may be changing somewhat in these politically correct times, but to Bowdlerize the sailor’s language represented here would be to deny its rich history. The traditions and origins remain.
Oppo BDP/ Remote Control. Consumers able to only to utilize 1 HDMI connection would be best served using the HDMI1 output and setting the BDP SACD output to PCM conversion or if they prefer to keep SACD in native format, to utilize the HDMI2 output if 4k upconversion and enhancement features aren’t important for their.
All were impressive for their abilities to playback 4K Ultra HD video at a bit rate of up to Mbps and pass through metadata for new high dynamic range HDR enhancements in the open and mandatory HDR10 format. We call the UDP the Ultimate Ultra HD Blu-ray player because in addition to handling virtually every 5-inch optical disc format needed for video and music entertainment, it also handles a huge selection of digital music formats including most Hi-Res Audio ones.
More impressively, in video it is the first player to promise support for the Dolby Vision HDR format through a forthcoming firmware update in addition to HDR The UBD is a full-sized component player in a familar black box accented by a substantial brushed-aluminum faceplate and an LCD readout display below the disc tray.
The readout is really more than a convenience and something that is sorely missed on competitive models, like the top-selling Samsung UBD-K Other amenities on the front of the player include a USB 2. The port will support up to p video at 60 frames per second. The Oppo UDP is a speedy player. Comparing disc-load times between the Oppo and Samsung players using an Ultra HD copy of The Revenant, time from disc load to the appears of the disc menu is about equal.
The Samsung player took 36 seconds while the Oppo was 39 seconds. Everything else about the player was similarly snappy and responsive, including activation of on-screen disc menu commands. Okay — so DVD-Audio and multi-channel SACDs are getting harder and harder to find, but most of those audiophiles who bought into the technology still enjoy the high-resolution benefits those formats deliver.
Naturally, they are going to need an on-going supply of compatible disc players. Thank you Oppo and Sony, which has also announced plans to market a similarly capable Ultra HD Blu-ray player in

Others have a growing library or like the look of a collectable box set. Compared to standard HD Blu-ray, a movie on Ultra HD Blu-ray can have more fine detail, be more colorful, can have more shades in dark images, and can include very bright highlights in attempt to bring home video closer to reality. These players have a track record of meeting high-quality expectations. They are solidly built and rarely seem to disappoint.
Components, especially optical players, deserve their own shelves isolated from vibration. The player has an attractive brushed aluminum face plate with the disc drawer and LCD readout in the center. There seems to be a trend lately to put buttons on top of components and make them feather-touch sensitive. OPPO sticks with the classic, tried and true front panel access with seven essential push buttons. It might be a bit bulky for some, but functionality rates high on my list.
The keys light up immediately when you touch it eliminating the need to find the right button when the room is dark.
